Core Word of the Fortnight: WANT 💙

Nov 6, 2026

Over the next two weeks at nursery, we will be focusing on the core word “want”. Core words are common words that help children communicate their needs, choices and ideas throughout the day.

Attached is a short video showing one of our nursery children modelling the Makaton sign for “want”. We will be using this word regularly during play, snack times, stories, songs and everyday interactions.

Please take a look at the attached poster for ideas on how you can support this learning at home. Simply using the word naturally during daily routines and modelling the sign alongside your speech can make a big difference. For example:

🫧 “I want bubbles.”
🍎 “I want an apple.”
🚗 “I want the car.”
🎨 “I want more paint.”

There is no expectation for children to copy the sign. Regularly seeing and hearing the word helps children understand its meaning and gives them more ways to communicate.

Thank you for helping us create a consistent communication approach between nursery and home. Together, we can give children more opportunities to express themselves and be understood.
