Our Budding Chefs: Sun Room Children Make Their Own Healthy Snacks

Feb 23, 2026

Over the course of this term, the children in Sun Room at Ilminster Avenue Nursery School have been on a brilliant journey of discovery — and it all came together recently when they made their own healthy snacks completely independently!

The journey began with exploring what healthy choices actually look like. Children delved into wonderful books including “Handa’s Surprise”, which sparked conversations about different fruits and where they come from, whilst also giving children the chance to taste and explore new fruits and vegetables. This kind of hands-on exploration is fantastic for developing children’s understanding of the world around them as well as their communication and language skills as they described tastes, textures and smells.

From there, children developed some really important practical skills, learning to spread and chop safely using appropriate tools. Mastering these techniques builds fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, but more than that, it gave the children a real sense of confidence and independence.

Watching the children bring all of these skills together to prepare their own snacks was wonderful. This work also supports our focus this year on introducing our Food and Nutrition Policy here at Ilminster Avenue. If you’d like to continue this learning at home, why not involve your child in planning their healthy packed lunch? After all, they are now fully qualified experts!
