June Newsletter 2025 – Term 6

Jun 2, 2025

Welcome to Term 6!

As ever, the year has sped away from us! Despite it all going in a flash, we truly love to watch your children grow and develop across the year. Although we know they will achieve great things, we are still always totally amazed at their amazing skills as they reach this end of the year. It has been particularly wonderful to see the introduction of woodwork this year. Not only has it provided the opportunity for children to learn new skills using real tools, they have also been able to express their imaginations in a new way.

Please have a look at our website to see all the fantastic photos from last term, as the children “Make a Model”. We hope to continue to provide the children with opportunities to develop these skills during this final term.

There is more fun, and learning planned for this last term, including a visit form “TwinniesAlpaca” on Wednesday 2nd July. The company will be bringing lots of farm animals to Nursery for the children to meet! We are all really excited!

Back to Basics

This year, we added a new section to our Curriculum. We wanted to explore the key skills that children need to develop the independence to they need to be successful in school. These skills will be essential as they move to Primary school. If you have children moving up in September, keep supporting them to practise these skills over the summer holidays. These skills included:

• Putting on their shoes and doing up the fasteners.
• Putting on their own coat and doing up the zip/buttons.
• Opening packages and food boxes by themselves.
• Using the toilet and managing clothes by themselves.
• Sticking with a problem until they find a solution.
• Tidying away their own things.

There are lots of steps along the way to achieve these outcomes and children will all achieve them in their own time. Celebrate every step towards success and give children the time to try, struggle and succeed. Lots of practice, praise and planning will each child succeed in their own way.

Governor Vancany

We have a vacancy for a Parent Governor on our board of Governors. This is a really important role.

As a Parent Governor you will be able to share your experience of the school from a Parents point of view and work with the board to improve things further.

We meet once each term in person at school form 4:00pm – 6:00pm. There is also the opportunity to attend via online. If you have a child who is returning to us in September or a younger one starting with us and are interested in this role, please ask at the office.

Family Link

Sadly, for us, Lucy has had a family bereavement and so will not be in school for a while. I know those of you who work closely with her will miss her but please know that there are lots of staff here who are keen to continue supporting you. Please don’t hesitate to seek one of us out if you need to talk at any time.

In the meantime, The Nurture Group will be continuing in our community room, and the Early birds programme will be running in the conservatory.
Thank you for your understanding at this time.

Term 6 Curriculum

This term our Curriculum focus is “Contribute to a Musical Performance”. The children will be learning all the skills to be able to join in with our year end concert!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development: children will be developing their resilience and building up sustained engagement with an activity. They will explore setting themselves a goal and following it through and using these skills to help in their performance.

Language Development: Children will be encouraged to share their own ideas and talk about their thoughts. We will be encouraging children to have the confidence to ask questions as part of conversation. We want them to use their confidence to help them to take part in the performance.

Physical Development: We want children to begin to make controlled marks in their drawing and writing this term, as well as develop their scissor skills. We will also be encouraging children to solve their own problems e.g. asking a friend to help them with a tricky job such as moving a heavy tyre etc.

Maths: Children will be encouraged to solve everyday number problems e.g. how to share out resources with friends. They will continue to build up their subitising skills, using 5-frames.

Literacy: We will be supporting children to recognise some familiar letters and words, including their names. We want them to use familiar ideas to re tell stories and perform them. We will be encouraging children to make marks and letters to represent their names. We will be sharing books with longer texts with the children.

Expressive Art and Design: We will be working with xylophones and chime bars to make our own music. We may even explore the skills of “conducting” music and songs.

Understanding of the World: We will be exploring how things work, exploring life cycles and we will be thinking about the wider world, especially when we are looking forward to our holidays!

We are looking forward to putting all of our skills together to bring you Ilminster Avenue Nursery School’s end of year concert!

We have leaflets in the entrance that tell you all about our curriculum and ideas for helping at home. We also have leaflets about “Risky play”, “Play Dough”, “Messy Play” and “Open Ended play”. They are great for easy ideas over the long summer holidays. Please come and help yourselves.
